We work with a small, select number of qualified craftspeople in Austria, and are careful to partner with operations that demonstrate their commitment to ecosocial values. It is our major concern to center the true art of hand-making in our work.

We want to stay close to ensure quality. That’s why we work exclusively with local producers of eastern Austria. That lowers the carbon footprint of each product, strengthens the local economy and contributes to resource efficiency.

Knowing, from the architecture scene, how wastefully resources are used and used up, our label was founded explicitly to offer well made lasting alternatives. We treat resources with care and produce with the entire life cycle of the material in mind. Every piece of furniture is finished from raw materials of lasting value so that, in addition to being sustainable, they are truly long-lived. Every material that mariedares uses boasts exceptional durability.

The furniture is made from renewable materials that guarantee sustainability, durability and wear resistance. We use resources sparingly, and create with the entire life cycle of the material in mind. 

mariedares was born of love for wood. Wood will never be boring, and we are intent on passing on our love of this material. We stand for the unadulterated use and treatment of wood as a living, raw material. We never use chipboard or pressed wood, which are manufactured with large quantities of sometimes harmful glues as a cost-cutting measure.

Wood is a timeless, durable and living material. That means it can contract and stretch; absorb and release moisture. The wood grain gives each finished piece a unique look. Our craftspeople select each piece of wood according to our specifications. The wood comes from Austrian forests and is milled locally. Austria’s forests are sustainably managed, which means more wood grows than is felled.

At the moment, our furniture is made using white ash, oak and walnut. These three types of wood have different characteristics and qualities: - The light color and ring-porous structure make ash an especially versatile and modern choice. - Oak is medium-brown and a longstanding classic in furniture design. - Walnut is a strong, hard, dark-brown material that adds a touch of exclusivity. Please note: Natural materials have an individual color and structure and will develop a patina over time.

As a material, steel is heavy and robust with extreme durability and resistence. Steel supports our furniture’s construction and, as a design element, complements its message. Steel has a material cycle that will last for generations, meaning it can be recycled frequently and without loss of quality, which protects resources. Please note: Our steel surfaces are coated to prevent rust. Scratches and excessive scouring may damage the coat.

Wood can and will change color over time. We take pains to use oils that are true in color to the raw material. An oiled surface is easy to care for. You can wipe off your product with a damp cloth. Please avoid any chemical cleaning products. Bitte beachte: After cleaning, do dry the surface so that no water drops are left standing.

Sidetable, nightstand, sculpture Two transparent steel blocks are frozen in the act of melting into one another, giving this fragile moment its form. The exchange between fragile lightness and physical heft define the apparently impossible form. The perforated steel blocks provide an interior view as well as stability and a wonderful play of light that enriches any home.

Coffee table, sculpture, podium A transparent metal sheath, carried by the living material of wood, allows the two bodies to melt together. The view through to the geometric form of the supporting wooden cuboid strengthens the pair’s connection. The massive wooden and steel blocks become a stable piece of furniture through their invisible connection on the underside. The piece’s closeness to the ground invites wanton usage.

Rack, sculpture, wallinstallation This decorative rack with plentiful storage space is inspired by traditional techniques for storing and ripening cheese wheels. The turned wooden wheels can be completely pulled out to reveal hollowed out interiors, and can be used like any classic drawer system. The understated steel shelf unit is secured against the wall.
